Pitfour Castle history
Pitfour Castle was built for a wealthy local fishmonger, John Richardson and family, around 1784 and was designed by one of Scotland's best known architects, Kirkcaldy born Robert Adam (1728-1792). Adam is best known for his many fine Castle Style homes such as Culzean Castle as well as designing much of Edinburgh's New Town.
In 1825, the Castle was enlarged to a design by William Burn, pioneer of the Scottish Baronial style and the most fashionable country house architect of his day. Burn is responsible for many fine works including The Edinburgh Academy.
Having fallen into disrepair, restoration work on Pitfour Castle began in 1964. However, in July 1969, as restoraton was nearing completion, the building was badly damaged by fire. Fortunately, in 1974, it was rescued from demolition and converted into apartments.
